Abstract

The article seeks to show how Lima Barreto highlighted in his work the issue of prejudice to which he was subjected while alive, due to his race and class condition. Through the search for traces of the press of the time (1910-1922), it also shows how the newspapers subjected him, in the period, to a cruel policy of forgetting and, above all, disqualification. It also seeks, following Lima Barreto’s life trajectory, to answer the question: what was it like to be a black intellectual, living in the suburbs, without carrying any of the items of distinction necessary for the literate of the period, less than two decades of the end of slavery? The article seeks to pay tribute to the writer, when, in 2022, the centenary of his death occurs.
