In 1979, Roberto Da Matta published the first Brazilian edition of Carnivals, Rogues, and Heroes. In this book, the anthropologist sustained that the application of the laws in Brazil was likely of being understood on the bases of four characters of the Brazilian social imaginary. For him these characters were the rogue, the sucker, the ‘caxias’ and the renouncer. This article will consider only the first three of them and will include a fourth one, the bandit, which perhaps will complete a more adequate system for the understanding of the days in which we live.
