The paper presents the partial results of a research that investigates how the new reading habits of news on the Internet are provoking another contemporary change in journalism: the invisibility of news sites’ home pages. It analyzes how access to news, through links distributed in social networks, search tools and portals results in the loss of meaning’s construction, which is considered one of the fundamental values of journalism. After collecting data about new reading habits, the authors undertook a bibliographic review about the home page and conducted in-depth interviews with journalists to understand the impact of the homepage’s silence on the production routines. It concludes that, as news are now detached from their original context, professionals feel challenged, but argue that it is necessary to maintain themselves committed to their social responsibility, highlighting, in headlines, issues of public interest.
