Citizen formation in the democracy: Analysis of media effect on political knowledge generation in precitizens.
The present study aims to analyze the impact of media consumption on the formation of political knowledge, a necessary element for the formation of citizen. Especially those who are still in the formative stage, called pre-citizens because they do not have already their majority. Taking as a reference the Mexican presidential electoral process of 2012, a mixed study was carried out. In the quantitative phase a survey was applied to 1030 students from public and private high schools. On the other hand, the qualitative study used focus groups, to capture young people’s perception of the media and their use as a source of political information. The main finding is that, contrary to what is theoretically proposed, not only focused attention to policy content generates political knowledge, but also focused attention to entertainment content also contributes to the formation of political knowledge in the segment studied.
