Abstract

The article aims to analyze reports published by international media on 12 June 2014 about the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup held in Brazil in the same year. The criterion of choice of news sources was defined from the countries participating in the competition, focusing on the ones that use Spanish or English as official language. The methodological choices were guided by the technique of content analysis, according to Bardin (2002), defining the study as a qualitative research based on bibliographic and documentary sources. With the analysis of these materials it is possible to infer that the foreigners have reinforced some general ideas about what is understood as Brazilian culture and identity, as the love of soccer, the beauties of Brazilian women and the features of a friendly nation.
