This article discusses the discursive construction used by Jornal Nacional of the Rede Globo de Televisão [Globo Television Network] in some large-scale political demonstrations. We aim to assess how Rede Globo performs as a political actor in different historical contexts through Jornal Nacional, in terms of the visibility, silencing and criminalisation of social movements and demonstrations, based on the discourse of television news. As corpus of this article, we use the Diretas Já rally in 1984, the
demonstrations of June 2013 in the city of São Paulo, and the general strike of April 2017.
