Brazilian social movements are currently facing several challenges to obtaining improvements in the agenda of media democratization, which is hindered both by the influence of the media conglomerates in commercial broadcasting and the lack of action by the government. Based on bibliographical research, document analysis and interviews with representatives of organizations that are part of the movement for media democratization, this paper analyses the current state of the sector and its challenges. We then reach the conclusion that society needs a higher degree of mobilization in order to better influence communication policies and thus promote actual changes in the sector.
