Abstract

This essay reflects on the practices of appropriation and reinterpretation of archives based on the experiences of the FGV CPDOC Audiovisual Production Workshops, which celebrate ten years in 2024. The workshops encourage the creation of short films based on the extensive collection of the CPDOC, the largest institution housing personal archives in Brazil. Since 2023, the workshops have become part of the project "New Perspectives on the Archive: Visuality, Dissemination, and Education in the Women's Archives at CPDOC" (FAPERJ/CNPq), which has so far produced three completed short films and three more in progress, focused on the theme "Women's History." In this essay, we propose a critical analysis of the creative processes of these productions, investigating how the students/creators appropriate the archives and confer new layers of meaning to the images. We aim to explore how the dialogue between past and present, mediated through cinema, reconfigures the understanding of the archive as instituition.
