Abstract

This article offers a critical reading of video art through the practices of women artists who, in the 1970s, challenged the boundaries between body, image, and performativity, at a time when television functioned as a vehicle for disseminating conservative political and cultural discourses. By analyzing the works of Joan Jonas (United States) and Regina Vater (Brazil), the text discusses how devices such as the mirror, the mask, and the camera operate not as tools of narcissistic self-reference, but as mechanisms of fragmentation, duplicity, disidentification, and subjective fabulation. In dialogue with Rosalind Krauss (1978) interpretation — which associates video art with structure of narcissistic mirroring — the article highlights experimental approaches that break with traditional modes of representation and subjectivation, especially those related to the feminine.
