Brazilian documentary In the intense now [No intenso agora] (João Moreira Salles, 2017), through an audiovisual compilation work, puts together archival family footages and historical images in order to construct a new film. The melancholic tone that pervades the images hinders their power to reconfigure the winners’ historical narratives. The sense of melancholy overwhelms the polissemic character of historical events in face of the begetting of a self-referent subject of the enunciation, which obliterates the emergence of new forms of connection between collective experiences and representations of the past.
